Referee dies after taking a punch to the head while writing a yellow card

MURRAY, Utah — A Utah soccer referee who slipped into a coma after being punched by a teenage player during a game a week ago died Saturday night, police said.
Ricardo Portillo, 46, of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following an assault, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said.
Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching Portillo after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.
“The suspect was close to Portillo and punched him once in the face as a result of the call,” Hoyal said in a press release.
The teen has been booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault. Continue

How Did You React to the Ban on Luis Suarez?

The reaction of many football fans and observers has made us wonder whether some football fans are humans or lower animals. What does it say about some football fans when their main focus is on the punishment rather than the vile act of Luis Suarez?
Over the past few days grown adults have said ridiculous things like, “Stop being a girl. Take the bite like a man and move on.” “The bite did not hurt anyone so what is the fuss about.” “It was not a bite. It was a simple nimble and Ivanovic did not make a big deal about it. He did not report it to the police so stop harassing Suarez.” “This is racism. Why are you all picking on Suarez?”
Let’s get something very clear. Among the lower animals it perfectly normal for the lion to chase another animal, sink its teeth into its neck and chew that unfortunate animal to bits. Preys in the wild do not wait at tables in a restaurant for food. Their table is the wild. Their menu includes all living things that move. It’s a gruesome sight to see an animal eating another, but that’s part of the survival game in the wild and IT IS NORMAL.
It’s not normal or civil for a footballer to sink his teeth or to attempt to sink his teeth into the flesh of another human. It does not matter what the level of pain is. Biting another human is a despicable act that defies human civility or decency.
The fact that the bite “did not hurt” does not mean that the act was less offensive or that Suarez should simply get a talking to. The determining factor is not whether it hurts or not. Goran Popov of West Bromwich Albion found this out back in February. He was redcarded for spitting at Tottenham’s Kyle Walker. Walker was not physically harmed by the saliva that was aimed at him. The act of spitting at someone and worse biting another human is beyond human dignity and deserves more than a yellow card.
West Brom manager Steve Clarke was furious and said: “I am disgusted. Goran knows it is wrong. The club will look at it and deal with it internally, and obviously he will be disciplined.”
That is a manager who did not defend his player. Liverpool’s attempt at showing disappointment failed miserably. Apparently the player and the club do not get it. The 21-page report that outlines the reason for the 10 match ban said as much.
Here are some excerpts from the report:
18. We noted that Mr Friend, the Match Referee, reported:
“I have to report that on approx 65mins in this match Branislav Ivanovic made an allegation to me that Luis Suarez had just bitten him. I did not see the incident as it happened off the ball and I was looking elsewhere. Having had a look at the DVD of the match I can confirm and it is clear that Luis Suarez did deliberately bite his opponent Branislav Ivanovic. If I had seen this incident at the time I would have classed this as violent conduct by Luis Suarez and sent him from the field of play. I can also confirm that none of the other match officials had seen this incident at the time. I would like the
FA to have a look at this incident of violent conduct.”
21. As Mr Suarez had admitted to the FA Rule E3 Charge (referin para 10), the Charge was proven. We also noted in the letter to Mr Suarez from the Club Secretary of Liverpool FC, Ms Zoe Ward, (refer in 17.4.7) it stated“… you confirmed that you bit the Chelsea player, Branislav Ivanovic, on the arm during the above fixture …”
44. Mr Suarez submitted that he accepted his bite to Mr Ivanovic’s arm did involve the application of some pressure by his teeth into Mr Ivanovic’s arm, which clearly resulted in Mr Ivanovic being aware that he had been bitten. It was further accepted that Mr Ivanovic appeared to be shocked by the incident,reacted by pushing Mr Suarez off him and might well have suffered some discomfort as a result of the bite.
61.The FA stated that such an incident has a deleterious effect on the image of the game of football in this country. It serves to undermine the integrity and reputation of the sport. Furthermore Mr Suarez’s conduct has damaged the image of English football across the globe.
The Liverpool v Chelsea game was watched by millions around the world. The FA realizes this and decided that the negative image of the game resulting from this biting incident, is a factor in determining the punishment. So the 10 match ban is not simply for the deplorable act but also a way of sending a strong message that if anyone else tarnishes the image of English Football, they can expect to be dealt with severely.
Is this fair? Maybe not BUT SUAREZ ONLY HAS HIMSELF TO BLAME FOR HIS THOUGHTLESS ACT.

Luis Suárez’s days in England may be over

I hope today’s incident involving Luis Suárez puts to bed the view of his supporters that the rest of the world treats him unfairly.
Luis Suárez is a very gifted footballer. He is a joy to watch. But he is either mentally unstable or has a serious personality flaw. Here is a list of things Suárez has done that many people find egregious and unforgiving:
July 2010 – Suárez deliberately handled the ball in the Uraguay v Ghana World Cup game. He was seen laughing when the Ghananian player missed the penalty that would have sent Ghana to the semi-finals. (Read more)
Nov 2010 – While at Ajax Suárez bit PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal’s shoulder and was given a seven-match ban (Read more)
Oct 2011 – Suárez screamed in “pain” after Jack Rodwell of Everton won the ball with a clean, one-footed challenge and the midfielder’s trailing knee caught Rodwell’s boot. The referee bought his theatrics and showed Roswell a red card. (Read more)
Dec 2011 – Suárez was charged with racially abusing Patrice Evra of Man United (Read more)
Jan 2013 – Luis Suárez admits to diving in the Liverpool v Stoke City game in October when the game was tied 0 – 0. (Read more)

Late in today’s game, cameras captured Suárez as he appeared to sink his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic’s arm. Ivanovic remonstrated with referee Kevin Friend after the incident. Friend spoke to Suárez briefly before deciding to allow the game to continue. Luis Suárez scored the equalising goal late in extra time to allow Liverpool to take a point from the game.
